There’s no wrong way to visit SLO, but if you’re looking for the best times to roll through, I’ve got the inside scoop. These bring Cal Poly families together and give you a front-row seat to student life (plus a few print-worthy photo ops).

(April): The ultimate three-day campus showcase for admitted students, families, alumni—you name it.
(Summer): Orientation with sunshine and snacks. Cal Poly Students, families and supporters can tour campus, meet staff and learn what’s ahead.
(September): Your student’s official welcome week. You get to send them off knowing they’ll be hiking, bonding and learning the ropes Mustang-style.
Mustang Family Weekend (October): The holy grail of family visits. Student-led tours, Learn by Doing labs, faculty lectures and loads of Cal Poly pride.
(June): Nothing says “worth the trip” like watching your Mustang strut across that graduation stage.

Evening: If your Mustang’s game isn’t already on, go catch one. From soccer at Spanos Stadium to volleyball at Mott Gym, cheering together is a guaranteed bonding moment.

After, grab dinner at Novo Restaurant & Lounge. Situated in the beautiful, historic Cigar Factory building downtown, Novo offers fresh, globally inspired dishes and vineyard-worthy wines, all served on a creekside patio.

Wednesday

Morning: Start with brunch at Del Monte Café, a local landmark serving up diner-style comfort food since 1981. If you’re lucky enough to snag a booth by the window, you might just linger longer than planned.

Afterward, walk off those hashbrowns with a stroll through Bubblegum Alley. It’s weird, a little gross and totally iconic. Don’t worry, though—you don’t have to chew anything to appreciate the absurdity. Then, head around the corner to browse Higuera Street’s locally loved boutiques and bookshops.

Afternoon: Sip and swirl your way through Edna Valley, where rolling vineyards and laid-back tasting rooms make wine country feel downright easygoing. No pressure, just pinot.

If wine’s not your vibe, wander through local galleries and public art downtown—SLO has more than a few surprises tucked into its alleys and storefronts.
